Having just completed an 18month project building my new family home I can now finally look back and ponder the process; the good the bad and the ugly.
I’ve also been asking myself questions…
- Would I do it again? (yes!, but not quite the same way)
- How has my business experience relayed into the build process?
What do the experts think?
I have often watched Kevin McLeod latch onto unsuspecting home builders (Grand Designs) when they kick off a project without a project manager. They are generally looking to self manage with either the husband or wife undertaking the duties. More often than not it is the budget that comes out worse off in these scenarios with the occasional house not quite finished or the owners having to sacrifice a key design or build element to get it done.
So why do they labour the point?
It's not just for good TV, it is one of the key attributes that is critical for any project to be successful. It is not just what you are doing, but HOW you do it. Pretty obvious really, but how many times do you see people who discount the value of Project Management?
How does this relate to the business of IT?
IT has been relatively late to the Project Management game. There are still many companies that don’t put enough emphasis on planning. They simply set-out with lots of enthusiasm and ideals and forget about the governance that Project Management can bring.
I have lost a few deals over time where my competitors have not factored in the Project Management effort and therefore appeared more cost effective and won the work. Some of those deals though, have come back to me after the fact, with the customer looking for assistance to get the project back on track.
Many clients however, do understand the value and invest in getting it right up front. It is these projects that are delivered to the business well within the horizon expected, resulting in a greater return on investment.
And just for those interested… we are in our new home; pretty much on budget, certainly built to the quality we expected, however a little bit later than we wanted.
But then, I blame the builder for that!
